Across the country, dairy producers have dumped milk and infected chickens have been killed, including millions of egg-laying hens, causing egg prices to skyrocket.

Animals at 25 egg and dairy production facilities, including one backyard coop, have tested positive, says the county health department.

Bird flu, or Avian influenza, is a virus that is spread from infected cows, birds and other animals to people.

Bird flu has been detected in dairy cattle in Churchill County, marking the first case in Northern Nevada and the second in the state. The Nevada Department of Agriculture reported the new case after the first detection in Nye County in December. Both were in dairy cows.

Although the virus has been detected at more than 700 California dairies, not a single non-dairy cow has tested positive, experts say.
