WASHINGTON − The Atlantic magazine published Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's messages to a group chat detailing the times and weapons used to strike Houthi targets in Yemen, as the fallout deepened over Trump administration officials using the encrypted chat app Signal to discuss classified war plans.
During his first appearance on the world stage in Brussels, Hegseth foolishly ruled out NATO membership for Ukraine and suggested its borders could never be restored to what they were before Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. What a negotiator! He threw away Ukraine’s leverage before peace talks had even begun.
The reason we know about this is that Waltz accidentally added Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of The Atlantic, to the chat. Goldberg left the chat after events — an airstrike on the Houthi group in Yemen on March 15 — confirmed its authenticity. He later published a story on the security breach.
Here's how the incident played out earlier this month, based on reporting from The Atlantic and from the wire service Reuters.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was far less chatty than other officials in the controversial Signal discussion on U.S. airstrikes in Yemen.
