D.C. was buzzing with activity Monday as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the presidential Inauguration fell on the same day for just the second time in history.

National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., patrol the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on Jan. 18, 2021. The memorial was closed to the public through Jan. 21 due to security concerns surrounding the presidential inauguration scheduled for Jan.
Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and members of a state organization that focuses on his legacy say they hope more people will serve after attending several of their events.
"Unity is now returning to America, and confidence and pride is soaring like never before in everything we do," Trump said.
The City of Springfield will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Flag Raising on Monday. The celebration will take place at noon inside of Springfield City Hall. Officer installations for the 2025 Greater Springfield NAAPC will also be recognized at the event. The flag raising is free and open to the public.
Organizations across the NYC area are marking MLK Day with special events honoring the civil rights leader's legacy.
