(CNN) - The United States is experiencing an egg shortage due to avian flu, causing more empty shelves and fewer choices at the grocery store. And the situation may not improve anytime soon. In November and December alone more than 17 million egg-laying hens died as a result of the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Despite high egg prices across the country, Washington consumers are paying less than those in states like Hawaii and Florida.

The highly contagious avian influenza has wreaked havoc on the egg market. In November and December alone, 17.2 million egg-laying hens died as a result of the virus. That’s nearly half of all birds killed by the virus in 2024,
