San Diego heroes Kevin Barrett and Cameron Whiting earned the Carnegie Medal for their bravery in rescuing a swimmer during a shark attack off Del Mar.

Two San Diego area men, Kevin Barrett and Cameron Whiting, have been awarded North America's highest honor for civilian heroism for saving their teammate from a shark attack while swimming in the Pacific Ocean in Del Mar.

Kevin Barrett, 51, of San Diego, and Cameron Whiting, 31, of Encinitas, will receive the Carnegie Medal, which recognizes civilians who perform acts of heroism at great personal risk, for guiding a wounded swimmer to shore after the man was bitten by a juvenile great white shark on June 2.
