California is only now heading into the teeth of the wildfire season, but the state has already seen nearly three times as much acreage burn than during all of 2023. The wildfires have threatened tens of thousands of homes and other structures across Southern California since they accelerated during a triple-digit heat wave over the weekend.

Massive smoke plumes from three wildfires raging simultaneously across four Southern California counties can be seen blanketing the skies from space. A video shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows smoke billowing from three separate fires: the Line, Bridge and Airport fires.

Smoke rose behind the L.A. skyline and blanketed the Mountain High ski resort. The Bridge, Line and Airport fires have together burned more than 100,000 acres.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man Tuesday in connection with the Line Fire ravaging southern California since Sept. 5.
