Karlby is a layer of wood glued to an mdf base, they call it "thick veneer", so it can go through a light sanding if scuffed/scratched maybe a couple times depending on how much you take off. So while other people raise it with for example the capita legs that they put on top of the drawer, you'd do it with the stand. I'm just courious how would it look!

You sometimes can get away with not finishing both sides of a cabinet top, but general recommendations are to finish inside and out to help keep the moisture absorption as even as possible to prevent warping, splitting and cracking.
